Although the Cupillard 256 manual wind movement runs for an approximate 17 hour power reserve period neither the hour nor minute hands want to move on their own and when setting the time only the hour hand can be set. Both issues likely suggest that at a minimum the cannon pinion needs to be tightened.
Additionally the bezel will not rotate, likely due to gunk buildup underneath. A complete overhaul is required. This seldom seen vintage 1960's Louis diver, which came from the estate of its original owner, has a glossy black "FRANCE" only signed dial that is lovely but not perfect condition as it shows wear. The lume, which remains fully intact and no longer glows after being exposed to bright light, has aged gracefully. The heavily worn faded black bezel does not rotate likely due to gunk underneath. The all stainless steel case shows honest wear with no visible signs of oxidation. The outer edge of the case back is stamped "ALL STAINLESS STEEL - WATERPROOF - ANTIMAGNETIC" with "100% WATERPROOF" followed by "TESTED 20 ATMOSPHERES" and "514108" stamped in the center. The inside of the case back is stamped LOUIS WATCH COMP FRANCE.
The crystal needs to be replaced. The 17 jewels unadjusted France "ANGUENOT FRERES (worn down)" stamped Cupillard 256 manual wind movement runs. After recently winding the non-screwdown crown 40 full revolutions the movement had an approximate 17 hour power reserve. However, neither the hour nor the minute hands want to move on their own and when setting the time only the hour hand can be set.
This watch measures approximately 38 mm excluding the crown, approximately 40.5 mm including the crown and approximately 19 mm between the lugs. Case thickness, measured from the bottom of the case back to the top of the bezel, is approximately 9 mm. Including the crystal thickness measures approximately 11 mm. As such there are no warranties, express or implied, attached with the sale of this watch.Vintage means old and while my personal belief is that old-school means better quality and workmanship, things can and do go wrong from time to time. For this watch that time is now. Any servicing costs going forward are your responsibility. And please study the 16 high magnification pictures carefully as they are part of the description and serve as an accurate representation of the condition of this watch.
