The date and time can be set without issue and the crown screws down, the crown cannot be wound as it just wants to screw down instead. After setting the date and time and pushing in the crown to the first position the crown will simply screw down when turned. To jump-start the seconds hand the watch needs to either be gently shaken or spun face down on a soft, flat surface.
Once the movement gets going and the watch is worn it will run strong and keep accurate time. If it isn't worn the power reserve tends to last at most a few hours. Given the issues mentioned and considering that the movement has not been serviced since 2008 a complete overhaul is required. This seldom seen vintage 1960's Kelbert big crown diver has a glossy black "SWISS T MADE" signed dial that is in lovely but not perfect condition as it shows age-related wear. The lume, which emits a quick-burst glow on only the dial after being exposed to bright light, has aged gracefully.
Some of the lume on the dial's hour markers show chipping, most notably at 2 and 9 o'clock, and the lume on the hour hand shows cracking. In person and on the wrist these imperfections are difficult to see unless under scrutiny. The silver bezel, which shows significant wear and rotates smoothly bidirectionally, presents nicely. The all stainless steel case shows honest wear with no visible signs of oxidation. The outside of the case back is stamped with a picture of a diver with the numbers "60/8" faintly seen. The inside of the case back is stamped "+ BREVET 238872" followed by BREV. The crystal should be replaced as it shows crazing and scratching.
The quickset date function works flawlessly by manually rolling over a new date and then moving the hour hand repeatedly between the 20.5 and 24 hour marks until the desired date has been reached. While the sharply threaded, screwdown crown screws down as it should it cannot be wound as it only wants to screw down.Given the issues mentioned and considering that the last service was done in 2008 (there are several watchmaker service markings on the inside of the case back with the most recent being from 2008) a complete overhaul is required. This watch measures approximately 37 mm excluding the crown, approximately 41.5 mm including the crown and and approximately 20 mm between the lugs. Case thickness, measured from the bottom of the case back to the top of the bezel, is approximately 10 mm. Including the crystal case thickness measures approximately 12 mm. Given that the crown cannot be wound and considering that it has been approximately 15 years since the last service was done a complete overhaul is required.
As such there are no warranties, express or implied, attached with the sale of this watch. Vintage means old and while my personal belief is that old-school means better quality and workmanship, things can and do go wrong from time to time.
Any servicing costs going forward are your responsibility. And please study the 12 high magnification pictures carefully as they are part of the description and serve as an accurate representation of the condition of this watch.
