Universal Genève Compur Chronograph cal. 285 vintage watch, 1936, NOT WORKING

Rare and very collectible 1936 Universal Genève Compur Chronograph cal. The Stainless Steel case is 35mm wide excluding crown and pushers. The snap-on back shows serial number 601685 on the inside with no model number on the outside (which is correct for the period), pointing to a 1936 model.

The crown is unmarked which is normal for early Universal Genève Chronographs. The elegant Art Deco dial is in very good condition so I think it was refinished in more recent times. The Acrylic glass is also probably not original.

The blue steel hands (difficult to capture in a photograph- they are a bright dark blue/purple) look original and the correct type and are in good condition. The back cover shows a lot of inscriptions from watchmakers which indicates that this watch was regularly serviced and well looked after. This would explains why it is in such a good condition for its age. There is no recent service history. The watch ticks and the balance moves freely when shaken but it stops after a while and it seems that the hairspring is touching the balance , so some adjustments to the hairspring to re-shape it and a service will be needed to bring it back to full working order.

All other functions appear to be working as they should. The chrono hand & minute total sub-hand reset to zero, the hour & minute hands can be adjusted smoothly with the crown and the watch can be fully wound.

The legendary UG Calibre 285 looks very clean. It is a manual hand-winding, 17 jewels movement. There is no paperwork or original box and the watch will be carefully packed in a small watch box. It comes with a new brown leather strap with silver buckle.
